Symptoms of Venous Insufficiency

Varicose veins are most often noticed because they are unsightly, enlarged veins that are bulging under the skin. The majority of patients who come to see us for treatment report other symptoms that can be as distressing as (or more than) the cosmetic appearance.

What are the symptoms of Venous Insufficiency?

The symptoms of varicose veins result from the cause, i.e. venous insufficiency. This leads to a pooling of blood in the veins of the legs, which causes distension, which in turn causes the following symptoms:

  • Heaviness
  • Tiredness
  • Itching, especially just above ankles
  • Swollen feet and ankles
  • Burning
  • Throbbing
  • Cramps, especially in bed at night

These symptoms tend to be worse after standing or sitting still for long periods of time, and during periods of hot weather. For women, they are particularly exacerbated during pregnancy.

How to relieve venous insufficiency symptoms?

These symptoms tend to be relieved by sitting or lying with your legs raised above your heart, and also by wearing compression stockings – although stockings are not a long-term solution. You will need treatment.
