Dr Nigel Hacking first qualified in Medicine in 1980 from the Middlesex Hospital medical School. After obtaining the MRCP qualification he then underwent his Radiology Training at the Southampton University Hospitals. He was one of the first 3 junior doctors to join the BSIR at its instigation in 1990 and then took up a Consultant post in Southampton in 1991. An extensive Vascular and Non-Vascular Interventional Radiology practice was then developed within the NHS. Dr Nigel Hacking pioneered many advances in Interventional Radiology throughout the his 30 year NHS career. He developed a TIPS (Trans jugular Intra Hepatic Shunt) service as well as developing and leading one of the busiest Interventional Oncology group practices in the UK treating many liver, kidney and other tumours with embolisation. He is one of the world pioneers and principal practitioners in both Fibroid and Prostate embolisation. He also expanded the Southampton University Hospital services to add in thermal ablation techniques (Radiofrequency, Microwave ablation as well as Cryoablation).
Dr Nigel Hacking retired from the NHS in 2020 to concentrate on his prostate and fibroid embolisation practices in UK and overseas as well as further developing his vascular skills in the venous system.
