Varicose veins are a common problem, affecting up to 1 in 3 adults in their lifetime. They are usually a sign of an underlying venous insufficiency.
Thread veins can appear anywhere on the body but are mostly evidenced on the legs and face. They are more common than varicose veins, affecting up to 80% of adults.
Leg ulcers appear as broken skin in the lower leg or feet. We have been successfully treating venous leg ulcers for over 20 years.

The vast majority of leg ulcers are caused by venous insufficiency; the same underlying cause of varicose veins.
At Veincentre, we believe that living with leg ulcers is a thing of the past.
Your consultation will begin with a conversation with one of our consultants that specialise in treating venous problems and specifically ulcers. Your consultant will talk to you about your past medical history including any previous bandaging or treatment you may have had and how effective you felt it was.
Your consultant will then undertake an ‘ABPI test’ which is essentially taking your blood pressure from both your arms and also your legs. This is important as it confirms whether your ulcer condition relates to an issue with your veins or your arteries. We typically find that over 60% of ulcers are caused by vein issues and these are the ulcers that we are able to treat effectively at Veincentre.
Once the ABPI has been carried out, your consultant will then perform a detailed colour duplex ultrasound scan on your legs – from your feet up to your groin area. This scan, along with the ABPI, is the only way to accurately identify what is causing your ulcer and if it’s an issue with your veins. If your ABPI / scan shows an arterial issue, your consultant will give you some guidance on what to do next.
Your consultant will take the time to explain the results of both these tests and outline what treatment options are suitable for you – including the benefits and any risks. This is an important conversation between you and your consultant and, although there’s probably a lot of information to take in, we encourage you to ask questions and ensure that any proposed treatment plan takes into consideration your preferences.
To make things straightforward and easy, we are pleased to let you know that all our prices are upfront and fixed. You may find that other providers talk about ‘from’ prices, which we never do.
An initial consultation with one of our Consultant Vascular Specialists costs just £350 and includes the colour duplex ultrasound scan of your legs as well as the ABPI test.
Your consultant will be able to discuss the prices for the treatment plan you require and this treatment quote will be confirmed to you in writing.

We believe that leg ulcers are a thing of the past … so please don’t suffer in silence. Give our friendly advisers a call to see how we can help you. A full diagnosis and treatment plan with one of our specialist consultants is only £350.
We prefer to treat leg ulcers as soon as possible after consultation as it is our experience that ulcers heal more quickly if we can get to them early. For this reason, and to make it easier for you, we like to book your treatment around two-weeks after your consultation (although your consultation is valid for 6-months before you would need to repeat it).
Some more information on the ABPI test and ultrasound scan from our Medical Director, Dr Mark Bratby…
An ABPI test and a colour duplex ultrasound scan are both painless, quick and non-invasive.
An ABPI test is used to determine the blood flow and circulation in your arteries and allows the consultant to confirm if the ulcer is venous rather than arterial.
A colour duplex ultrasound scan accurately maps the anatomy (what the veins look like) and the physiology (how they are working e.g. direction of blood flow). The scan will reveal if there is reflux (reverse blood flow) in any of the veins underlying the skin. If so, this indicates the veins contain faulty valves. When working properly the valves ensure blood flows back up the veins to the heart. If the valves are faulty, blood flows back down the leg (reflux) which causes increased pressure of blood in the leg veins. This damages the skin which then eventually breaks down resulting in a leg ulcer.
