Varicose veins are a common problem, affecting up to 1 in 3 adults in their lifetime. They are usually a sign of an underlying venous insufficiency.
Thread veins can appear anywhere on the body but are mostly evidenced on the legs and face. They are more common than varicose veins, affecting up to 80% of adults.

Scottish teacher uses cancelled covid holiday money for varicose vein treatment.
Primary school teacher Julie Easton, aged 39 from Falkirk in Scotland, said using her cancelled covid holiday money for varicose vein treatment was one of the best decisions she’s ever made.
Julie was supposed to be going on holiday to Portugal with her husband and two children, but like so many people when the pandemic hit they had to put their plans on hold. It was then that they decided to use the money to get rid of her varicose veins once and for all.
Julie has been so self-conscious about her grape-like veins on the back of her leg for more than 18 years and remembers even on her honeymoon only wearing long dresses.
Julie said: “It got to the point where I was so embarrassed to show my legs that I had to ask my husband to take the children to their swimming lessons as I didn’t want to walk by their side with my veins in sight for all to see.”
At Julie’s consultation, the colour duplex ultrasound scan revealed that she had faulty valves in the short saphenous veins in both legs, as well as having visible varicosities in both calves. Julie attended Veincentre Glasgow with Dr Mathias and had EVLA and foam sclerotherapy on both legs. Dr Mathias treated the short saphenous veins using EVLA, to destroy the faulty valves and restore healthy blood flow to Julie’s legs. The visible veins on both legs were then treated using foam sclerotherapy, which works by killing the vein and allowing the blood to reroute round the healthy veins.
Julie is delighted with the outcome of her treatment.
“I remember being amazed that the pain vanished as soon as I had the treatment. They even scanned my other leg and made sure to treat all of the veins which were causing the problem, which is just fantastic.” Said Julie.
Julie is now so much more confident and has got back into her favourite hobby of going on long walks with her family and running again too without being worried her veins are popping through her leggings.
When asked why she decided to do it now, she said: “I had my legs stripped surgically years ago but unfortunately they came back. Whenever I looked at private options they were always in London and the thought of all that travelling put me off. I was over the moon when I saw that Veincentre was in Glasgow, it certainly made my decision even easier.”
Veincentre Glasgow is located at 234 West George Street, Glasgow, G2 4QY. The clinic is led by two specialist consultants, Dr Navin Mathias and Dr Susie Goodwin and clinics predominantly run on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. To book an appointment, call the patient advisory team on 01782 725960.
